COLD WAR ! Preview Friday 5th December

"Oldknows studio group – one of the oldest artist studio groups in the Oldknows factory building is presenting a Cold War show to celebrate group’s cultural diversity and to exchange memories of the past.
Yelena Popova coordinator of the Actual Wall space said:
‘We conceived the Actual Wall as a space for debate, proposition and collaboration. The theme of the show was not chosen for any political reason, we felt would be good to share our personal memories from the period we all lived through.’
Work from OK studio artists and associates explore the rich theme of the Cold War from all angles offering plenty of opportunities for nostalgia and humour. The opening night will be sparkled with Simon Withers’s sonic interventions and live performances by Alison Garner, Simon Raven and Yelena Popova. Depicting the Cold War space race, Yelena’s Russian rocket will be launched to the ‘red planet’ Mars !
Also you can download an online copy of the OK Press (OK studio's funzine from http://www.sendspace.com/file/hs91dm ) "

Broadway Lecture 31st October

Fine Art at NTU presents
The Live Lecture at the Broadway Cinema and Media Centre
Anna Dumitriu
31 October, 2008

Anna Dumitriu will explain her approach to transdisciplinary art practice, what working collaboratively means to her, why she ‘talks’ to bacteria and why unnecessary research is so important. As Einstein said: “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?

Anna’s highly experimental work is involved with the nature of trans-disciplinary practice-based research. She has collaborated with scientists on at least 10 major projects over the past eleven years and often tends to go very deeply into her chosen area of research.

She has utilised her demographic to successfully carry out un-authorised, issue-based interventions, Tescos, Starbucks, Virgin and Coke have all been subjected to her creativity. She's fucked coke machines, interrogated shoppers, bought everything and returned it, telling stores why their products are crap. Coming from Nottingham UK she's taken a fresh look at the shopping experience and invested it with all the thrills you get as a shoplifter, but this time its legal. An Investigation by John Newling

Make a piano in Spain
‘What do you do to make yourself feel better?’
An Investigation by John Newling
‘Out loud’
Saturday 18th of October
Installation
15th of October to 14th of November
At Wellcome Collection, 183 Euston Road, London
On the 6th through 10th of May 2008 Nicola Martin, Kerry Howarth and John Newling met 500 people between Euston and St Pancras stations. From each of them they collected a written response to the question, ‘What do you do to make yourself feel better?’ The response was overwhelming, giving the project a narrative that was both revealing and moving. ‘Make a piano in Spain’ is a project by artist John Newling that investigates and transforms these responses.
The project comprises a list of 50 situations constructed from the material (presented in the large wall-based work), a public reading ‘Out loud’ of all 500 accounts, and a book that demonstrates the investigations and transformations that Newling pursued.
Treating the text as material subject to changes in meaning and form, Newling trawled through the 500 responses, isolating all the references to actions, places and objects. As blocks of text the collected stream of events, sites and materials seemed akin to a chant of what we do, where we go, and which objects we prefer to use to restore our sense of self. Common references were gathered from the texts as a numeric order of frequency and, subsequently, calculated as percentages of occurrence.
This data provided the lists from which Newling compiled the top 50 actions, places and objects. The lists in turn became the material from which he constructed the 50 imagined ‘situations.’ They emerge from a diagnostic process that distilled the responses, while simultaneously forming a text that possesses its own autonomy. Newling explains: “Each situation becomes a potential event that makes for a very human kind of medicine; both a cartography of us and a conceivable territory to experience. They represent a programme of possibilities and a series of dramas made possible through the generous engagement of 500 people…”
Help yourself to a copy of ‘Make a piano in Spain’
The first 500 copies of the publication are free to people visiting Wellcome Collection. These gifts repay the generosity of the original 500 instances of public engagement, now reflected in the citations, investigations and transformations that constitute the project ‘Make a piano in Spain.’

Saatchi Online Student Opportunities
Each year we run a competition for students graduating from UK colleges entitled New Sensations http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/4ns/ . The four finalists from this competition are given £1000 to produce a piece of work in response to the theme. These four finalists also featured in a series of 3 minute documentaries broadcast on the Saatchi Gallery website and on Channel 4 in the UK in October. The overall winner of the competition receives £3000 to fund her artistic career. Last year the 20 shortlisted artists were invited to exhibit at the Truman Brewery (Brick lane, London) in a show that coincided with this year’s Frieze art fair. As a direct result of this competition Marcus Lanyon’s and Mark Melvin’s pieces were acquired by the Zabludowicz Collection and Mie Olise Kjaergaard sold her work to a private collector and has been offered her first solo show in London next March at the Alexia Goethe Gallery.

More details about this year’s competition can be found at http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/4ns/.
Our aim for this year is to continue to give our student artists similar opportunities internationally with opportunities to take part in group exhibitions and Art Fairs around the world. Upcoming events include SCOPE Art Fairs, Concrete and Glass as well as opportunities to exhibit at the new gallery and other events outside the UK.
By registering with Saatchi Online Student Artists are also able to enter our SHOWDOWN section of the site, where artists can upload their work for viewers to vote on. A new round of SHOWDOWN is about to start if you wish to enter.

We also hope it will provide a unique method of networking with those outside your college to help unite young artists as they venture into the professional art world.

MA graduate winner - Ruchi Goyal

September 2008 – RUGMARK ANNOUNCES WINNERS OF ITS FIRST ETHICAL RUG DESIGN COMPETITION.

RugMark UK has announced the winners of its ethical rug design competition. This is the first year for the competition, which aims to raise awareness about the ethics of rug manufacturing amongst design students and interior designers.

The competition was open to students registered at universities in the UK and Ireland, and was won by Ruchi Goyal, an MA student at Nottingham Trent University. Her prize was a trip to Kathmandu to see her rug being hand knotted by skilled artisans.

"The best thing about my trip to Kathmandu was when I entered the workshop and saw my rug on the loom" says Ruchi aged 27

"The most important and wonderful thing that RugMark does is to take children out of the rug factories and give them the safe and healthy environment that a child needs. It helps them with their schooling and development when their families can't afford it."

Event: ICO Essentials: PLAY "advised cert 15 1hr 16mins"

From the ICO website:
"Play honours the irreverent, impudent, subversive and fun in artists’ film. Ranging from Dada to Postmodernism this programme is a playground for unconventional ideas and approaches, with work that mocks and parodies a cinema that takes itself seriously for all the wrong reasons. These playful works cast aside pretensions and freely celebrate life and art in all its forms.

"The programme features celebrated work ranging from pioneering dada short Filmstudie by Hans Richter, John Smith's irreverent linguistic conundrum Associations and George Kuchar's camp classic Hold Me While I'm Naked."

Gold-Soundz - Private View

I'd like to invite you to the opening of Gold-Soundz on Saturday the 27 of September from 1 till 3pm, at Southwell Artspace.

Gold-Soundz is an exhibition inspired by music, especially music played with guitars often quite loudly. Drawings, paintings, sculpture, videos, print, books, music and sound installations all combine to create an engaging and thought provoking exhibition.

The idea being not to promote a literal representation of music, but a more lyrical and humorous approach, where music and sound become part of the inspiration to the artistic process, founded on the joy and appreciation of music.

Curated by Geoff Diego Litherland, Gold Soundz runs from Saturday 27 September to 1 November. All welcome to the Opening event on Saturday 27 September 1pm to 3pm.

MA Structure

The MA programmes at this University are structured around two modules which represent the three phases of the MA award: the Postgraduate Certificate, the Postgraduate Diploma and the Master of Arts.

Module 1: Research and Context (60 credits)

Postgraduate Certificate phase

This module aims to help students develop the generic skills and knowledge that the arts professions and the fields of higher research demand.

It provides students with;

  • Opportunities to engage with broader postgraduate educational experiences.
  • Exploration of themes that are generic to the world of the creative industries.
  • Lectures, seminars and workshops, emphasizing the importance of research, and the skills required to succeed in higher study in the arts,
  • An introduction to the standards required for a Masters degree.
  • Individual development opportunities through the allocation of a personal supervisor to every student.

Supervisors work with students during this first module to help them produce their own learning agreement, to set down the working relationship between supervisor and student. It allows for the student to think seriously about their project and all the resources that will be required to achieve their aims.

During this first module, lectures are delivered to the whole MA group by expert staff and visiting practitioners and theorists from the worlds of the arts, media and business. Subject area groups also meet in subject-based workshops and individual tutorials. Specialists and experts in each subject area come to work with students in order to maintain a strong sense of each different discipline that the school provides for.

All students receive special workshops to support writing activities required for the MA, and overseas students are able to attend special language support sessions focusing on the kind of terminology and specialist language used in the art and design subject area.

Module 2: Project Realisation and Presentation (120 credits)

Postgraduate Diploma phase

The second module allows the student to begin to refine and focus on their project through subject specialist-based study, driven through individual activities and tutorials and subject specialist lectures and seminars.

Evening events allow students to appreciate the importance of high level presentation skills, and there is also a study visit during this phase. Last year, students visited New York to attend a series of exhibitions, trade and cultural events. The year before, they visited Antwerp and Paris.

Overseas students who require language support can continue to attend special classes aimed at helping develop writing and verbal presentation skills to standards required for the award.

MA phase

The Masters phase allows students to work independently on the final stretch of their MA project. Individual tutorials support students, and are intended to help students keep on track with their project and focus on the standards required to achieve the Masters award. Students work toward their final assessment, but also produce examples of their work for the MA Exposition, a public opening intended to celebrate the work and successes of our students throughout the previous year.

MA by Registered Project or Thesis:

A course tailored specifically to your area of individual interest.

All our courses are centred around you, the student, and based on a project proposal and learning agreement which are developed in consultation with your project supervisor.
